The idea for This Land came to me when I was working on another project in rural Georgia. It struck me that the people I was interviewing for that project - gun rights advocates who were born and raised in what I would, at the time, call “the middle of nowhere” - and I had nothing in common. Nothing, that is, other than the fact that we were all Americans. I asked myself, in that moment, what that meant. What does being an American look like? What does it feel like? How can you tell who is American? These questions stuck with me.
